One of the integral parts of our Technical Department is its storekeepers, who manage far more than inventory. It’s a dynamic and versatile role that requires both hands-on practice and ongoing training as well as passing various exams to uphold the highest security standards.

The main duty of our storekeepers is managing the specialised aviation system to process orders from mechanics and technicians, thereby ensuring that the right equipment and parts are available for aircraft configuration and repairs. They handle incoming inspections, oversee inventory checks, and manage the relocation of smaller as well as larger items while also working closely with the production and purchasing teams to coordinate urgent shipments. Although the role isn’t difficult, it’s a very responsible one and requires adaptability.

‘Here at airBaltic, a storekeeper always needs to be prepared for new responsibilities and requests,’ says Artūrs Upatnieks, who has recently taken the next step in his aviation career, transitioning from Storekeeper to Material Planner at airBaltic. ‘Often, it’s about prioritising tasks – sometimes you’re in the middle of one thing, but then the next request comes in, and it’s even more crucial.’

One of the more exciting yet challenging aspects of a storekeeper’s job is driving on the airport apron and operating a forklift. ‘We all have to pass exams to be qualified to move large and heavy items around and lift them into designated areas,’ Upatnieks explains. ‘This can be quite tricky, especially when you’re handling something like an aircraft engine. All aircraft parts are expensive, but some are even more exclusive and require extra caution.’
